Determinations of kLa provide insights into the mass transfer efficiency of reactors as well as any impact resulting from operating conditions or media additives. Values of kLa in systems with active biologicals can be calculated from oxygen readings acquired immediately following termination of
oxygen flow into the reactor.
A preliminary check of the response time of the oxygen sensor used to collect the
oxygen readings should be run to allow for comparison with the time constant for mass
transfer.
